Hailing from deep South Aus, Taiaha is here to bring the folk to hip-hop. Armed with funding from Carclew, his Maori heritage and a strong musical community his new EP The “Lucky Rubb Experience” is definitely something fresh in the Adelaide music scene.
You may recognise the boii from such events as AOR, his work in Duo TIL The Break or creating culture in the OMCharmFellowship.
When asked to describe the EP, T. said its basically going back to his roots. "I tried to make a record when I was 16, similar stuff, telling stories, singing songs, spitting raps. I moved on quickly, however, to more exciting experiences, making live styled raw hip-hop with Jefferson Lee Curtis, TIL the break. Its still the most fun but I had to go back to my inner soul and get out this solo ting”.
Taiaha has been a big part of the hiphop and folk communities since a young child and so the “LRE” is community record in a sense, all the recording was engineered within the crew, played by community musicians and mixed and mastered by people close to home.
For instance, None Of Rub was recorded in his caravan, his little brothers on the saxophone and double bass, the drum samples cut from vinyl libraries of down south producers. Its all about keeping the art real and tangible.
